Germany entered the match under pressure following a disastrous 2-0 loss to Slovakia, which sparked debate over whether Julian Nagelsmann’s squad might become the first German team to miss out on a World Cup qualifying campaign.

Nagelsmann himself seemed aware of the urgency and made five changes to the starting lineup that had suffered the disappointing defeat against Slovakia. Only Antonio Rüdiger survived from the back four, which was reshaped into a back three with Walderman Anton and Robin Koch joining the Real Madrid defender.

At the start, the team appeared focused on showing attitude and commitment on every contested ball. The goal came early, in the 7th minute, when Serge Gnabry scored with a delicate chip after a pass from Nick Woltemade, who had won possession in midfield.

However, after that, Germany gradually fell into lethargy, and aside from some breaks down the right by Gnabry and Jamie Leweling, they showed little threat.

Northern Ireland defended high and left spaces, but Germany failed to exploit them and allowed an opponent who, though limited in attack, sought chances from set pieces.

From one such corner in the 34th minute, Northern Ireland equalized with a volley from Price, who received the ball at the far post. It was Northern Ireland’s first shot on target.

The impact of Gnabry’s early goal—vital for both the team and the crowd—was lost, and Germany began to fade. Around the 40th minute, there were whistles from the stands as Germany circulated the ball in their own half without gaining ground.

Germany showed a different face after the hour mark, helped by the introduction of Maximilian Beier, Nadiem Amiri, and Leon Goretzka.

The pace quickened, and chances started to appear. Shortly after coming on, Amiri earned two dangerous free kicks near the box—first Raum’s shot was saved by Peacock-Farrell, then Anton headed a ball that hit the crossbar but was ruled out.

Then, in the 67th minute, Peacock-Farrell made a great save from Wirtz inside the area. The goal seemed imminent and came a bit through persistence in the 69th minute. Raum delivered a ball into the box looking for Beier, who missed it, but the keeper was unsettled, allowing Amiri to score into an empty net at the far post.

The third goal quickly followed, a direct free kick from Wirtz in the 72nd minute. Amiri was the one fouled to earn the set piece once again.
