Aubameyang, returning once again to spearhead Gabon's continental hopes, heads a refreshed but ambitious squad announced by coach Thierry Mouyouma.

Drawn into a challenging Group F alongside Cameroon, Ivory Coast, and Mozambique, Gabon face a tough start in Agadir, with their opener set for 24 December, as confirmed by CAF.

The squad includes several familiar faces making a comeback to the continental stage. Aubameyang, now 36, arrives after a strong season at Olympique Marseille, scoring eight goals and providing nine assists.

His presence is expected but continues to generate excitement among fans eager to see Gabon go deep after missing out on the 2023 tournament.

Alongside the former Arsenal forward, Gabon retain the experienced core that steered them through qualification: Denis Bouanga (LAFC), veteran defender Bruno Ecuele Manga, midfielder Mario Lemina and full-back Jacques Ekomie.

These players remain central as Mouyouma balances continuity with strategic refreshes.

Returns and surprises

Malick Evouna, absent from the national team since 2019 despite 32 caps, returns after impressing for Mangasport. The 32-year-old forward could provide a decisive impact off the bench.

Bordeaux winger Royce Openda keeps his place at 23, a product of Gabon's youth system, and one of the brightest attacking prospects in the squad.

Notable omissions, such as Yannis Mbemba, have sparked debate among supporters, despite his recent strong performances. Jim Allevinah and Shavy Babicka also make the squad after recovering from injury just in time.

Defensively, Mouyouma continues to rely on experience, with Ecuele Manga leading a backline expected to face stiff tests from the heavyweights in Group F.

Fixtures and objectives

Gabon open against Cameroon on 24 December, face Mozambique on 28 December, and conclude the group stage against reigning champions Ivory Coast on 31 December, all in Agadir.

The team has not progressed beyond the quarter-finals since 2012, but Mouyouma insists this squad reflects a clear ambition to compete.

By blending experienced internationals, returning players and daring youngsters, Gabon believe they are ready to challenge expectations under captain Aubameyang.
