Tottenham Hotspur confirmed his decision on Friday, marking an unconventional departure from the sport. Rather than injuries or dwindling opportunities, Whiteman’s motivation lies in a creative passion that’s been growing for years.

"I have ideas for photography projects and short films," he told 'The Athletic'. "My plan is to make short films and maybe one day a feature. I’ve worked as an assistant on several film sets, and that’s where I see my future now."

Whiteman leaves the game just five months after celebrating Tottenham’s Europa League triumph in Bilbao — his first and only title with the club he joined as a child. Despite being part of the first-team squad since 2016, he made only one senior appearance: a brief substitute cameo in a 4-0 Europa League win over Ludogorets in November 2020.

After that, he spent 18 months on loan at Degerfors in Sweden, where he made 34 appearances before an injury in 2022 effectively ended his playing career. Aside from a few reserve games, Whiteman didn’t feature again for Spurs.

Reflecting on his decision, he said: "I got to a point where I preferred to move on rather than join a club I didn’t want to be at. I always told myself I wanted to play at the highest level — and if that wasn’t possible, I’d do something else. Now I’m taking that leap of faith."

Whiteman hopes to channel the same discipline he learned in football into his new profession. "I’d love to be on set working with great filmmakers and cinematographers. I’ve got so much to learn, but it feels exciting — and a bit terrifying too."
