Black week for English teams in the Champions League

None of the six Premier League representatives managed to win in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16.

The first leg of the Champions League round of 16 was one to forget for the English teams. It all started badly with Liverpool's defeat in Istanbul against a Galatasaray side that was better. The most positive thing for Arne Slot's side is that the deficit is minimal and they have a chance to come back at Anfield Road with the support of their fans.

Tottenham, on the other hand, cannot say the same, as they were thrashed by Atlético Madrid at the Metropolitano in a match that will be remembered for the substitution of goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky after just 15 minutes of play. Newcastle played well, but saw Barcelona equalise from the penalty spot in stoppage time and will now have to give it their all at the Camp Nou.

Things did not improve on Wednesday. Arsenal played in the first match and could only manage a draw against Bayer Leverkusen with a dubious penalty. Manchester City and Chelsea, meanwhile, were thrashed in their visits to Real Madrid and PSG, respectively. Guardiola's team was not up to the task at any point, while Liam Rosenior's side collapsed in a forgettable final half hour.

Results of the first leg of the Champions League round of 16

  • Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool
  • Atlético Madrid 5-2 Tottenham
  • Newcastle 1-1 Barcelona
  • Atalanta 1-6 Bayern Munich
  • Bayer Leverkusen 1-1 Arsenal
  • Real Madrid 3-0 Manchester City
  • PSG 5-2 Chelsea
  • Bodo Glimt 3-0 Sporting Portugal

Five second legs to be played in England

With the exception of Newcastle, who will play for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals in Barcelona, the rest of the Premier League teams will play their matches at home.

Arsenal are in the best position, playing a single-leg tie at the Emirates Stadium against Bayer Leverkusen. Arteta's side are strong favourites to qualify. Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham, meanwhile, must overcome a three-goal deficit. The Spurs are focused on securing their place in the Premier League, but it looks very difficult for them to achieve this.

The Blues and the Sky Blues will be looking for a magical night at Stamford Bridge and the Etihad Stadium, respectively, to achieve the feat of turning around a tie that looks very difficult.

Finally, Liverpool will be looking to overturn the one-goal deficit they brought back from Turkey at Anfield. Arne Slot's side are better, and with the support of Anfield Road, they must prove that their improvement in recent weeks in the Premier League is not a mirage. It would be a huge disappointment not to see the Reds in the Champions League quarter-finals.
