Excitement in the Premier League

Arsenal's unexpected draw away to Wolves has tightened up the top of the Premier League table.

In a week that saw the first legs of the Champions League play-offs, there was also Premier League action. In fact, one of those matches that could ultimately decide the title was played. Manchester City and Arsenal will play in the EFL Cup final at the end of March, so their matches that weekend were postponed.

In the case of the Gunners, Mikel Arteta's side played that match on Wednesday. The Premier League leaders visited the bottom side, a seemingly doomed Wolves. The Londoners took an early lead and extended their advantage to two goals, but their complacency allowed the home side to close the gap. In stoppage time, a misunderstanding between David Raya and Calafiori ended in an own goal by the Italian defender, which meant that Arsenal dropped two points in the most unexpected of matches.

Premier League standings

  1. Arsenal 58 points (one game in hand)
  2. Manchester 53 points
  3. Aston Villa 50 points
  4. Manchester United 45 points

Exciting weekend

The Premier League never stops, and this weekend sees the 27th round of fixtures. In it, the two clear title contenders have difficult matches. Manchester City welcome Newcastle to the Etihad Stadium in a clash between two Champions League teams. Pep Guardiola's side have only conceded one draw in their last four games and are raising their level. Furthermore, Newcastle are not doing well away from home and City won both games in the recent EFL Cup semi-final.

Mikel Arteta's side, meanwhile, visit Tottenham in the North London derby. Arsenal are struggling in their recent Premier League away games, having drawn three of their last four. In addition, the Spurs have a new manager following the arrival of Igor Tudor to replace the sacked Thomas Frank. If the Gunners want to remain favourites to win the Premier League, they will have to overcome their neighbours from the north of the capital.
